Kimberly Karpanty tours nationally and internationally as an invited guest artist and as a chorographer and performer with Travesty Dance Group, of which she is a co-founder and Artistic Director. Karpanty choreographed, taught and performed professionally in New York City for over ten years, touring nationally with Rondo American Dance Theatre in works by Anna Sokolow, Manuel Alum, Moses Pendleton, and Murray Louis among others, and was a soloist with Linda Nutter & Dancers. She was a founding member of the collaborative, interdisciplinary dance & theatre group StraightJacket/Danza en vano, the 1993 recipient of the U.S./Mexico Fund for Culture Grant. She has since performed in works by Brad Garner, Cliff Keuter, Joan Meggitt, Tommy Parlon, Darwin Prioleau, Kora Radella, Leanne Schmidt and Jennifer Tsukayama.
Karpanty has made over 50 dances in modern dance, dance/theatre, screen dance and concert jazz dance genres. She frequently collaborates with composers, poets, musicians, new media artists and scenic and lighting designers. Her work has been produced throughout the United States and abroad in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico and Spain.
Karpanty is an Associate Professor of Dance at Kent State University where she directs the pre-professional Kent Dance Ensemble and teaches modern dance and Simonson-based jazz dance techniques, improvisation, advanced composition, dance science, dance & technology, pedagogy and American jazz dance history. She holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Choreography and Dance Technology from Arizona State University and a Master of Arts in Dance and Dance Education from New York University. She is a six-time recipient of the KSU Faculty Excellence Award, a Fulbright Specialist Scholar and a fully certified teacher of Simonson Technique and Core Dynamics ® Pilates.
